현대의 사람들은 휴대폰 카메라로 하루에 몇 장씩 사진을 찍는다. 배터리가 충분한 기계만 있다면 어디서나 사진을 찍을 수 있는 지금은 아날로그 방식으로 사진을 인화하는 일이 드물어졌다. 반면에 옛사람들에게는 사진 한 장이 귀했고, 소중히 액자에 표구하여 간직했던 물건들은 당시엔 소중한 사람을 기억하고 기록하기 위한 것이었지만, 지금은 그저 오브제에 지나치지 않는다.
빈티지, 골동품 액자들을 바라보다 보면 낯선 사람들의 사진이 낡은 나무 액자 틀에 끼워져 있다. 사진 속 그들의 이름과 나이조차 모르는 나는 그것을 그저 장식품으로 바라보게 된다. 이러한 장식적 의미만 남아버린 액자에 영감을 받아 이미지(사진)를 넘어 틀(액자)까지도 장식의 요소로 바꿔본다. 이미지와 틀의 경계를 형태와 색과 형의 균형으로 허물어보며, 틀 내부의 작은 캔버스를 바꿔 끼우면 또 다른 조합이 생성되기도 한다.
Nowadays, people take multiple photos a day with their phone cameras. As long as the battery lasts, photos can be taken anywhere, making analog photo printing a rare practice. In contrast, for people in the past, a single photograph was precious, carefully framed and preserved. Those objects were once meant to remember and record cherished individuals, but today they often serve merely as decorative objects.
When looking at vintage and antique frames, I see photos of strangers mounted in worn wooden frames. Not knowing their names or ages, I perceive these simply as ornaments. Inspired by these frames that have lost their original meaning and become purely decorative, I transform not only the images but also the frames into elements of decoration. By blurring the boundaries between image and frame through form, color, and balance, new combinations emerge when small canvases within the frames are swapped out.
